Field Target is a shooting competition based upon typical hunting situations, it was originally a way to train hunters to humanly kill their game. The targets are life size metal silhouettes of the typical airgunners quarry. The silhouettes have a hole in the center, known as the 'kill zone', usually colored red orange or yellow. The objective of the shooter is to hit the 'kill zone' - if they manage to hit The targets are set at different distances varying from 10 to 55 yards. The "kill zones vary in size from about 1/4" to 1 1/2" . The typical placement of targets are in gullies, atop trees, through tunnels and in windy locations. There are typically 2 targets per lane and 2 shots per target for a total of 4 points per lane. FT competitors may have to shoot from four different positions - seated, kneeling, standing and prone. Some FT match directors find it amusing to make your shooting position as uncomfortable as possible. |

There are 2 primary classes in Field Target, Compressed air guns (PCP) and Spring powered guns. (springer's). A PCP gun is filled with 3000psi air normally from a SCUBA tank. Its shot cycle is very smooth and is essentially recoilless, These guns are very very accurate and easy to shoot. A springer is cocked by compressing a large spring within the rifle, upon discharge the piston is driven forward by the spring. The resulting high pressure air propels the pellet down the barrel. These guns shot cycle can be rather harsh, as a result they tend to be a little less accurate and harder to shoot for beginners. To protect the targets the maximum power level allowed is 20 FPE. The preferred caliber is 177 because of the size of the kill zones and a flatter shot curve. While some folks have some very expensive setups, it's simply not necessary on our course. A standard hunting gun will be more than accurate enough. There are many good setup now available such as the Beeman R9 at $300 for springer class or a Air Arms S400C at $550 for PCP class. The scope should be at least a 10x power and a 20x or greater would be recommended for the Diablo course. Pistol Field Target is currently gaining popularity and we've expanded to include Pistols in our matches but it is a work in progress. Please contact us for more details. We have a few articles to intimidate the novices located under the match reports. More information can be found here... |
